Autumn shadows loger grow
Summer past and ground grows cold
Leaves plastered on the ground
Trees bare beside the parking area
Empty of cars or life
Night wind has an icy edge
All which was has moved on
The swimming pool closed over
Shutters on windows latched till Spring
A state of hibernation found
The caretaker from the village
Will trek up the road
Not daily as was his chore before
With milk and eggs and butter
Instead clean out the gutters once a month
Cut the lawns and ensure
No door is open or shutter banging
Till the Spring sunshine comes again
And holidaymakers in colours gay
Once more visit and contemplate
How to do as close to nothing
As the holiday spirit will allow.
