* when you were three *

*** when you were three ***
You often wonder who you are
Where your world might be
If this was the life that was intended
Marked out when you were three
Should you expect more
There seems no peace
And yet there is no war
Your smiles often fall it seems
On ground so hard and barren
As if all your efforts make you more
An outsider an always one of them
The backs of those you know
Too often turned from your needs
Seems your voice does not reach their ears
Deaf and heedless to your pleads
You do not seek that much
One to love who would in return
Love you as you would love them
With trust and joy and loyalty
A smidgen of commonsense
Intelligence and humour
Yet all you meet seem so far removed
From the love you pursue
Those upon whom your time consume
Fail you when they should stand true
Leave you wandering alone
Wondering if this was the life intended
Marked out when you were three.
