I cannot hold my smile up high
Chiselled off my face
The happiness I once wore
By an inner grieving replaced
My duty do I seek to serve
Reward in ashes for my food
Cold stone to sleep against
Bitter words barbed heart slay
I find myself a lifetime distant
Form where I wanted to be
And yet in stubbornness I stay
Seems I will never learn
Some battles you must lose
Surrender now and rebuild
Eternal war is not the way
And refusing to accept defeat
Is the saddest maddest way.
