Still the same

* still the same *
All the refinements of the age
The running water in every room
Flowing electricity from every point
Light available at touch of a switch
All the modern conveniences
Carpet lush and deep as quicksand
Wallpaper flocked with Georgian beauty
This synchronicity of design and elegance
Achievements to civilise our homely caves
Fabricate them in brick or steel or wood
Still a space as ancestors knew
Still seek house to make a home
Imprint our own personalities
On banality of walls which surround
Our hiding holes from other souls
Our measured space of privacy
Here we can be strong or weak
Let vulnerabilities show
Engineered marvels of the age
Electricity, water, the squawking wireless
Cannot hide the obvious truth
No matter how comfortably fitted out
For all our civilised modernity
Fashionable design and tasteful restraint
No blinds or vines or Japanese panels can disguise
These are caves made livable for human eyes.
