History of stones

* history of stones *
In pastures green they lie
Remnants of another age
Stone towers rebuilt as dry stone walls
To keep the idle sheep in place
Not to resist blows and warlike actions
Of Viking raiders rampant
These stones have seen so much
Carried forth by ice glaciers
Moraine dumped in these soft rolling downs
Lasted as forests were levelled for firewood
Lords farmers monks and shepherds
Lived their lives and died
And stones remain between the pastures
Atop each other piled
Marked by Time and marking time
More deeply than we shall know.
