Memory prompts

** memory prompts **
Often colour or scent will conjure
A place or occasion of yesteryear
The shade of green on a dress
Orange bold of your coat when we met first
Diesel fumes take me back to childhood
Watching laden milk tankers turn for the factory
Up the sloping road beyond the railway
Silver triggers reminder of high fashion creations
The clothes of tomorrow modelled by Barbarella
Or royal purple of roman senator togas
Dyed by Phonecians from sea shells
A piece of history stuck in niche of memory
Squeal of wiper blades recalls the interminable days
Dark and cold of Northern Winters
Though where we lived it rarely snowed
So all was mud and slush and dampness
Clothes claustrophobic inside
Proved inadequate against cold outside
Winter gnawed constantly at you
A hundred thousand tiny edged teeth
Sapping at your strength and life and smile
Leaving you drained weary and belligerent
Christmas cheer put on hold
When a traffic jam encountered
Or all the world just moved too bloody slow
And season's saccharine television
Made me homicidal with forced bonhomie
Warmth of your breath recalls
Passion urgent kisses deep
A sudden understanding of companionship
Coming home to what I always sought
In colour and scent of your lips was caught
Such fleeting pieces of Life's entirety
Forged together unreservedly
In colour scents touch taste and sound
World made complete and forever locked
In depths of memory perpetually found.
