City on edge of day.

** city on edge of day **
Daybreak in a city
is an eerie place
As if the being was empty
All souls claimed by the night
You might see a taxi furtively
As a creeping inner urban rat
Running a red light at an empty intersection
For close to everyone in bed
There are some creatures nocturnal
Using these dawn hours of peace
Garbage men collecting the rubbish
Upon their clanging clanking steeds
The council workers washing down the streets
Making the city clean and neat
And as unfocused as a duck drunk on cider
The lost nightclubbing are wandering about
Too tired to fall asleep
Too poor to grab a taxi
They seek out places for a coffee
Where midway through conversation
They will fall asleep
Waiting for the first train or bus to run
To return them home to bed
In these dawn hours
I wonder who I am
Walking the streets alone
Observing others at their chores
Or just trying to stay awake
This city is a friend
In this dawn silence find its heart
Walk the streets unhurried by the crowds which shop
Need not fret about getting somewhere
To work and earn my pay
No boss pursues you
To city on edge of day
This time before full brightness
This time as night rolled back
This time is your time
To question yourself and find an answer right.
