Thai fire balloons

** Thai fire balloons **
Those paper fire balloons
Lifting off at night from Thai beaches
Drifting lazily on own heated air
Rising gradually upward and out to sea
Until inevitably they must plunge
Fall into the salt waters beneath
Some times I see my days
As being as those paper balloons are
Temporary in form and briefly beautiful
In the act of living consuming self
Being worn down and burnt out
By this act of being
Hoping to keep drifting beautifully
Unchallenged by harsh realities
It is night and dark
Beneath lurks an unforgiving sea
And yet around me so distracting
The lonely total beauty of others I see
Alone we crowd the night air
Together a great beauty to behold
Yet never any of us knowing
When our flames will run
As inevitably they must
And into sea drop and expire.
