Thoughts against orders

Thoughts against orders

 * thoughts against orders *
Whistling dirges in the dark
Beside the Rhine after five long years
A pause before tomorrow's push
Tank engines idling as cool down
The night gradually envelopes
All evidence of Man's warlike urge
The need to fight and purge
The other of language or nationality
Or political ideals or religious creed
We kill and in turn are killed
Beneath same Sun on shared planet
How foolish our quarrels will appear
When we have left this Earth so dear
Raced across galaxies vast
So our seed so dispersed might forever last.
