Growing less not greater

Growing less not greater

  * growing less not greater *
Life as we know it grows
The cultures of old
Leave us monoliths magnificent
Stonehenge or the Pyramids
Structures to dwarf humanity
Make us understand our smallness of being
Our insignificance in universe and Time
So much was larger and louder
Machines great threshing mechanisms
Pulleys and belts and gears and cogs
Factories built around them to hold them
People minions to these steam powered coal fed monsters
Now as we grow larger and taller
Would all be considered well fed giants
Before our stunted underfed ancestors
The length of our lives biblical in scale
We make our machines and devices ever smaller
Miniaturising our tools in size and sound
A murmuring of clicking the only vocabulary they possess
No great utterances of steam
No clanking deafening machine symphony
We exist with machines so small
Performing so many deeds of our choosing
As if we had become Masters of this Universe
And the universe watches
The insignificance of our world
Meagreness of our deeds
We who are Gods in our small pond
Unable to explore any further
Our visions growing smaller
Our deeds and lives more insignificant
Laying a basis it must be hoped
For our ancestors to properly challenge
The universe in which we live
Beyond the atmospheric bubble of our world.
