May dissolving

May dissolving

** May dissolving **
Last day of May
Enter like a lamb
Depart like a lion
In the southern climes
Our May harbringer of Winter
Sketches snow on distant peaks
Lays frosting on green grass
Trees shed leaves if they can
Others bent by weight
As dew or frost or rain clings
To every leaf or branch
Ground grown hard and cold
A frozen slice of earth
Somewhere deep animals sleep
In places snug and warm
While upon the surface we scurry
A land of flattened dulled light
Days shorter than your work
Darkness closes tighter earlier
Stars shine bright as specks of ice
In this world of Autumn sliding
Out of May and into Winter
Turn on heating and carry umbrellas
Chilly days of intemperate weather
Are here to stay.
