Who knows

* who knows *
Who knows what our world
Might be like or care
If events had been different
A lucky musket shot there
A pardon late delivered
A line of law more deeply abused
A decision not to care
If Chuchill died on the veldt
Or Hitler in a WW1 trench
If the communists had been crushed
If loving always made sense
If you had said hello
Rather than just walking by
Would the world be the same
Or so different we would not know
That what had passed was no more
The world in which we lived was this
Our eyes can see no more
And all those shadows of what had been
Decayed and replaced by others
As certain in Time
And just as easily flawed.
